DIY Home Gym in a Small Space

Let’s create a home gym in a small space! I recently converted a corner of our basement into a home gym, using several affordable DIY’s to spruce it up! Designing a DIY home gym in a small space is not hard!

In this blog post I will share tips on how YOU can create a DIY home gym even if you have a small space for it.

First, let’s take a look back at where we started with this space. Here is a BEFORE photo.

Wall Storage for Organization

One of the easiest things you can do when working with a small space is to add wall organization. We were gifted this Crownwall from Garage Royalty (linked here) and it was the perfect size for one of the gym walls. By adding this to the wall, we were able to keep nearly everything off the floor, making the space more open for working out.

If you’re comfortable with power tools and love to DIY, you could totally make your own wall organization as well. You could do something as simple as adding several shelves and hooks for storage.

These are brackets from Amazon that I love and have used within our home for shelves. Home Depot has many affordable options for wood, and they will cut whatever size you need for your shelves.

I have several of these shelves in my home, and love them!

By adding inexpensive hooks, like these, you can easily hang exercise bands, hand towels, ankle weights, or whatever your heart desires.

Mirror, Mirror

Every good gym needs a full length mirror, in my opinion. There are so many options when it comes to full length mirrors, and a lot of times they are expensive. Also, if you are working with a small space, you will need something pretty specific in size. That’s where this FUN mirror DIY comes in handy! This is the second time I have done this DIY in my home now, and I love it.

I ordered these inexpensive wall mirrors off amazon. They came in a 3 pack and there are several different options for size. Next, I painted a black (or whatever color you prefer) rectangle that was slightly larger than the mirror. Using command strips, I hung the mirrors against the black rectangle. This is not only super inexpensive, but in my opinion looks great in a small space! It’s also very customizable if you are working with a small space.

DIY Cement Wall using Feather Finish

The next DIY I did in this space was on the opposite wall. I wanted to create a modern, industrial feel in this gym space. Because we already have exposed black ceilings, I thought by adding an inexpensive cement wall treatment it would really tie the whole space together. This wall gives an industrial and organic feel to the space which is exactly what I was going for.

In order to achieve this look, I used a product called Henry Feather Finish. This was my first time working with this product and in the process I learned a lot. Here are my TIPS.

Do NOT mix the entire box with water. I made this mistake with the first box I bought. Instead, work in batches. When mixed with water the product completely dries within 10-15 minutes. This does not leave you enough time to complete a whole wall.

The consistency of the product should be about the same as muffin batter. Not super runny but not as thick as cookie dough batter. I’m not sure how to better explain it (lol). Hopefully you have baked both of those things, if not, sorry!

When applying the product onto the wall I found this tool to work the best. The technique that worked best for me was to simply apply like you were icing a cake. There is really no right or wrong way to do this.

I’d also highly recommend buying this container to mix the product in and for ease when applying it to the wall. I found both of these items at Home Depot.

This product is very forgiving, will lighten as it dries and will dry completely on the wall within about 24hrs. If you’d like to see the video process of me completing this DIY, head on over to my IG page and my saved highlight GYMSpace.

Lastly, because I get several questions on where we bought our gym floor mats from, I’ll link them here!

This DIY home gym in our small basement space turned out better than I thought it would and the most important part is it is now super functional! All I need now is a work out buddy 😉 HA!
